Why We Chose Vertical Farming for Manchester's Future

Traditional strawberry farming in the UK faces weather unpredictability and space constraints. We built our Manchester operation on vertical growing towers because they deliver year-round harvest, use 95% less water, and let us grow fresh berries steps from our customers.

Our growth story

From 1 Tower to 28 How We Built Dillon's Strawberry Farm. NEXT STAGE Support Us.

When we started, we had one vertical grow tower and a vision. Today, Dillon's Strawberry Farm Manchester operates 28 towers and continues to expand. Here's how we got here. Started off with our back garden, 1 polytunnel, and 1 tower — and now we have 28. Next stage: Sponsoring a Tower enables us to grow faster without debt or having to borrow to fund our dream. Year-round growing

How we grow strawberries year-round in the UK

The UK's outdoor strawberry season runs May to July. Vertical grow towers solve this by letting us produce fresh, pesticide-free strawberries every month. Here's how it works and what it means for you.

April 2026

April marks the start of outdoor strawberry season in Manchester

April is the start of outdoor strawberry season across the UK — and at Dillon's Strawberry Farm in Manchester, it's one of the busiest months of the year. **What's Happening at the Farm This April** Our vertical grow towers are running year-round, producing fresh strawberries indoors regardless of the weather. But April marks the point where we also begin preparing our outdoor growing areas — polytunnels, soil prep, and planting out new strawberry runners ready for the June 2026 harvest. For UK strawberry growers, April is critical. Soil temperatures are rising, daylight hours are increasing, and the risk of late frosts is reducing week by week. It's the window where preparation translates directly into yield. **Why April Matters for UK Strawberry Farming** The traditional UK strawberry season runs from June to September for outdoor crops. But growers who prepare in April — setting runners, protecting against late frosts, and managing irrigation — see significantly higher yields come harvest time. Our vertical grow towers give us an edge here. Because we grow indoors as well as outdoors, we're not entirely at the mercy of the British weather. We can maintain consistent supply while also scaling up our outdoor operation this spring. **First Harvest: June 2026** Our first full harvest is due in June 2026. Pre-orders are open now — order a small, medium, or large box of fresh, pesticide-free strawberries from Manchester. You can also sponsor a tower from £500/year, or adopt a tower from £19/month to receive monthly strawberry deliveries and farm updates. — Anthony Dillon, Founder, Dillon's Strawberry Farm Manchester

FAQ

Common questions about vertical farming and strawberries

Find answers about how we grow strawberries using vertical farming technology and our current availability.

What is vertical farming and how does it work?

Vertical farming grows crops in stacked layers using controlled environment technology. We use Vertical grow towers at Dillon's Strawberry Farm Manchester to grow strawberries indoors year-round, using less water and space than traditional farming methods.

When are fresh strawberries available from your farm?

Vertical farming allows us to produce strawberries throughout the year, not just in summer. Check our availability by contacting us or signing up to our newsletter for updates on when fresh batches are ready for purchase.

Why choose vertically grown strawberries over traditional ones?

Our vertically grown strawberries are fresher because they're grown locally in Manchester with minimal transportation. We use less water, no pesticides, and can harvest at peak ripeness, giving you better flavor and quality fruit.

How do Vertical grow towers reduce environmental impact?

Vertical grow towers use up to 95% less water than traditional farming, require no soil, and eliminate pesticide runoff. Growing locally in Manchester also cuts transport emissions, making our strawberries a more sustainable choice.
